Psalm 12 (ESV)
Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;
with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts,those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
our lips are with us; who is master over us?”“Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord; ”I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.You, O Lord, will keep them; you will guard us from this generation forever.On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of man.
David, the writer of this Psalm, is feeling that evil has prevailed on Earth. What evil is David talking?
Is it war? Is it a famine? Is it a natural diaster?
If I would write about evil prevailing war, famine and disasters would be on my top list. Not David, he says evil has prevailed because the faithful are gone and the unfaithful are plundering the poor and needy.
Poverty will never go away. I know it is sad but it is true, there will always be poor people that live on Earth. Even though there are many bad reasons why people are poor from drug abuse to pure laziness there are still plenty of people who live in the world that have nothing because they were born into it.
We should never stop caring for people. Proverbs 21:13 says “Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.” God loves all people and wants us to love them also
The Bible is about loving God first but then loving our neighbor. Imagine if we practiced this on Earth today? Love the poor and do not take from them.
